Young Roots
Education Sessions

“What’s important is that children have the opportunity to bond with the natural world, to learn to love it and feel comfortable in it, before being asked to heal its wounds.”

David Sobel

What is Young Roots?

Fun, friendship and learning to grow healthy food!

Young Roots sessions are opportunities for:

  • immersive learning,

  • developing emotional resilience,

  • feeling valued as part of a community,

  • building self-confidence,

  • connecting with nature.

Our Young Roots sessions are designed to encourage and support children and young people to be global citizens, being a part of the puzzle to create a greener, sustainable world.

Learning opportunities can include, but are not limited to:

  • A greater connection to nature, and understanding of its importance.

  • A sense of positivity and power that they can be pivotal in supporting the natural world and tackling climate change through hands on activity.

  •  A knowledge and awareness of healthy eating and sustainable practice – for example, through:

-growing, caring for and harvesting fruit and vegetables;

-discussing food, sustainable choices and business and food sources;

-composting;

-activities to support biodiversity;

-food preparation and cooking.

This hands on learning supports the social, emotional and physical health of the child or young person, meeting them where they are and encouraging individual development.
Through the sessions learning naturally and holistically occurs, providing links to many
areas of the National Curriculum particularly SMSC and school-based topics.

Facilities on site include:

  • fully enclosed market garden site,

  • 4 polytunnels,

  • compost toilet,

  • site kitchen,

  • shelter in polytunnels and packing shed.
